Gorilla Doctors making Forest Calls – Thousands of visitors come to Uganda- Rwanda – the DRC each year with a desire to see and track the mountain gorillas of Uganda in
Bwindi Impenetrable Forest, Mgahinga Park, Volcanoes National Park in Rwanda and Virunga National Park in the Democratic Republic of Congo.
The Trekkers spend hours hiking through forests in order to spend an hour with a habituated gorilla family group and are simply amazed by their encounter. What they do not realize that mountain gorillas receive a lot of caring oversight from Rangers of each country, through limiting time with gorillas, health rules for visitors, on the lookout for poachers and snares, simply protecting the Habitats of the Gentle Giants of the Forest.
Behind the scenes, that visitors do not see, there is a group of dedicated men and women who also hike up the mountains for hours to check on the health, well-being of the various mountain gorilla group. They are called the Gorilla Doctors and belong to a dedicated organization called the Mountain Gorilla Veterinary Project (MGVP). It is one of few conservation programs in the world providing healthcare for the endangered primates which goes all the way from immunizations by darts to surgery in the forest when one of the gentle giants has suffered an injury.
It is Amazing what they can do ranging from checkups to assessing health risks for the various gorillas, all done behind the scenes, yet without their critical care and input the number of gorillas would be decreasing instead of increasing as they have been in recent time, up to 880 in the last survey of the 3 countries with Uganda leading at 480, 400 in Bwindi Impenetrable Forest alone.
The Vetinary Doctors not only give medical care to the gorillas, they also monitor if there are any new diseases arising that could affect human beings, just like visitors can give a cold, flu, measles to mountain gorillas, a new disease could be spread from them to humans.
They work in Uganda, Rwanda and Democratic Republic of Congo and not only to they make forest calls they care for some orphaned gorillas. They are truly dedicated professionals dedicated the preservation and well-being of the Mountain Gorillas…sadly most visitors to the various forests never know their story…
